"Drinking due to stress" alters the brain, and even after abstaining, it does not return to normal, leading to a decreased ability to cope with changes in middle age, according to a U.S. team's mouse experiment.
A paper titled "Impact of chronic alcohol and stress on midlife cognition and locus coeruleus integrity in mice," published by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, revealed through mouse experiments that starting to drink for stress relief in youth can lead to negative effects on cognitive function in middle age, even after long periods of abstinence.
